Imara is not a fan of tattoos. In fact, she hates tattoos, specifically ones without sentimental values. She didn’t think portraits of cartoon characters or philosophical quotes was something to obsess over. Moreover, a majority of her peers has tattoos. Not just any tattoos, weirdly shaped tattoos on their biceps and thighs, legs and hands. There’s even one guy in her Biology class that has a tattoo of lightning on his face. â€Å"It’s almost disgusting,† Imara would say to herself when she saw him. â€Å"He had such a cute face. Still cute, but the tattoo makes him look ridiculous†. Imara believes tattoos are out to destroy her generation. â€Å"Tattoos are stamps that generalize us and make us all look bad,† she said once. She moved closer to the group. â€Å"I’m sorry, what,† she asked aloud. â€Å"I said you’re so ding dong. Ding dong, ding dong.† Before Imara could respond, her eyes opened to the sight of her dimly lit bedroom. She glanced at the time on her phone to see ten minutes had gone by. â€Å"Ding dong,† the doorbell sang again. She got up and headed to the door. When she opened it, there was no one in sight. The only thing visible was the cloudless sky, unsaturated bluebells, and the vacant street. She closed the door. As she walked back into her room, she bumped her scarred arm into the door handle. â€Å"Ow,† she bawled. The intense pain was throbbing. Establishing political control in South Asia, was something that the British was able to accomplish in the late 70s and early 80s. The British saw certain opportunities that led for them to start trading and commerce from India to outside world. The British had plans for India, which later led to collection of revenues on behalf of the Mughal Emperor, resulting decline of power by the Mughals side. As for the Ryotwari system in India that played a role as land revenue systems before-hand, after the British came along. It affected India because the ownership of the land was given to the peasants and the British government collected the tax which demonstrated not fair to the peasants. The revenue rates as per the Ryotwari system were 50% with land being dry and irrigated with 60%. The Zamindars were never the owners of their own land and the rent collectors would not be fair towards them. The British were able to establish political control in South Asia because of confusion created by the decline in power of the Mughal Empire, the compulsion to take over new territories, and the implementation of the Ryotwari system over India. During the 1700s, the Mughal Empire had a significant decline in power, and was unable to directly govern or control its territories. Afterwards, the local rulers, called the Raja’s and Sultan’s, greedy for power over India made claims to power causing trouble and violence to spread over local territories .This caused confusion within India’s government because, the Raja’s and Sultans were not able to clearly identify their territories and rules. For example, Bernard Cohn’s essay on the Banaras region clearly marked that â€Å"it was precisely because there were always ‘many sharers in the dignity and power of kingship with overlapping rights and obligations that ’empire and ‘state’ represented ‘limited political entities in India'† (11). Resulting with no leadership or general politics which were formed at critical movements that highlights the causes of decline and it was important for the structure of the Mughal administrative system. Adding to the British control over the political establishment for South Asia, the peasants and the zamindars from the northern and the westerns part of India were added towards this problem. For the British, it was easier to target the zamindars for collecting revenues, as they show loyalty and mostly were the powerful class of a local populations. The zamindars were enjoying the given power from the British, as they would collect money from the peasants and the British government officials would take money from zamindars. The zamindars would have to pay a fixed revenue towards to the government officials as their fees. The book states, â€Å"The Ryotwari system defined the state itself as the supreme zamindar and vested a ryot with individual proprietary rights in land in return for annual cash payment or revenue assessments to the government (ibid.)† (73). The revenue that was collected by the zamindar was fixed and to be collected from each village. Focusing on empire-building for India, it ended up being under the rule of the British. British took advantage of India in ways of getting everything flushed out. By being in control for their profits from raw material goods and the fact of having larger populations and the diversity towards the markets. Later, after they had settled for some time the British took interest in Indian economy where the focus was to grow. A toxic relationship is a relationship with anyone that takes, takes, takes, yet never gives back or gives back in harmful ways. Friends and family or even mere acquaintances that wear us down to the point of exhaustion; always asking for a favor, a loan or in many cases, just someone to listen to them, yet when it comes time to return the favor, they never do, or they don’t keep my best interests at heart when doing so. I’m not interested in continuing to associate with people who do not hold me in their highest regard. No one should have to deal with this type of person in his/her life. My first example of a toxic relationship focuses on my personal relationship with a friend of mine. I just needed to vent to her about my father’s condition and found out that my problem only took a back seat to her personal drama. But, for the past six years, every time she had a problem with her own health or her ex-husband, she would call on me and I would always go out of my way to listen to her. Now it was Nina’s chance to give back to me what I had given her for all those years and she was just not interested. I just don’t need to this kind of relationship in my life. Another example of a toxic relationship comes to me from my good friend Ray. Now Ray, whom I’ve known since high school, has always been a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He had always treated others in the same fashion that he himself would like to be treated. Then, about a year ago he met Sally. They dated for several months here in Maryland, while she was undergoing chemotherapy. After her treatment, she returned home to Florida. While here, Ray treated her like a queen, as she should be treated. Sally then asked him to move to Florida to be with her. He soon accepted the invitation and left shortly thereafter. Ray had left here to be with Sally, the woman of his dreams, a nightmare in my opinion. He moved from a nice apartment and good paying job, to sleeping on the couch in his girlfriend’s house; while she shared her bed with her ex-husband. He would spend his days taking care of the house, Sally and her son. At one point he commented to me that his life there was much like the life of a butler, living in poverty. Sally, you see, had been given everything she ever asked for, from Ray, while here. But once she returned home, the roles were reversed and she did not feel the need to reciprocate any of nice things that Ray had done for her. He would still do everything for her because that is just the kind of guy Ray is. He soon realized that he too had been in a toxic relationship. He recently moved back to Maryland, after a sixth month stay in Florida with Sally. There are many reasons why people decide to stay in a toxic relationship. A couple reasons may be fear of being alone, or personal insecurities. Whatever the reason, I understand that it is never an easy thing removing oneself from a friendship of many years or from a relationship that you have hopes of making work. Many people like that kind of thing or don’t know anything different. I, myself, am not that kind of person any longer. I have personally experienced the effects of a toxic relationship for way too long. It’s time for everyone to acknowledge the facts. Not everyone is going to treat you with your best interests at heart and hold you in high regard. Weed thru the good and the bad in your life; I am. Keep the best and dump the rest! No one needs a toxic relationship.
